Authoring Tool

Building engaging, high quality e-learning should be something that anyone can do so we’ve built an Authoring Tool to help our customers do just that.

Click the links on the left to find out about the templates that form our Authoring Tool.   Find out which template is best suited to which learning requirement and see what the template looks like.

We’ll be posting news of our updates programme in the News section so check back regularly to keep updated.

Introduction and summary

This is a very basic template commonly used at the start and/or end of a section to display pure unadorned information.

Text only

This is a basic template similar to the Introduction and summary allowing you to arrange your information in two columns of text side by side.

Text with graphics

This template allows you to place a graphic and text on the page.

This template has been significantly enhanced in version 6 of the Authoring Tool:

  • a choice of 10 transition effects to use with your graphic image
  • five new page layouts to augment the existing four layouts to allow for word wrapping or overlay on your page design

(More detailed information and on-line examples to appear here early in the new year.)

Hot text

This template allows you to add a bulleted list of items that can be clicked for more information about each item. This interactivity allows you to present information in smaller engaging packets on the page.

This template is enhanced in version 6 of the Authoring Tool:

  • whimsy effect to the existing page layout
  • full page layout for a different presentation style

(More detailed information and on-line examples to appear here early in the new year.)

Clickable graphic

This template allows you to use an image with various areas defined to click for more information. This interactivity allows you to present information in smaller engaging packets on the page.

This template is enhanced in version 6 of the Authoring Tool:

  • tooltip information displays on each hot spot
  • text on left image on right to compliment the existing layout
  • text over the image layout for a new presentation style

(More detailed information and on-line examples to appear here early in the new year.)

Open input

This template allows you to add questions where the user types in some thoughts on a topic you are dealing with. The Open Input Feedback template can be used with the Open Input template to give users feedback to compare their answers to.

(More detailed information and on-line examples to appear here early in the new year.)

Open input feedback

This template is used to give the user feedback on information they have entered in an Open Input question.

(More detailed information and on-line examples to appear here early in the new year.)

Multiple choice

This template allows you to create a simple multiple-choice question with a question stem and two or more options with only one option being correct.

(More detailed information and on-line examples to appear here early in the new year.)

This template allows you to create a question with multiple correct answers.

(More detailed information and on-line examples to appear here early in the new year.)

Single column drag and drop

This template allows you to create two types of questions:

  • a question with a list of items to be put in order
  • a question where the user has to match items

(More detailed information and on-line examples to appear here early in the new year.)

Drag and drop

This template allows you to create a page with a question  and a list of items that can be dragged and dropped into pre-defined areas

This template has been significantly enhanced in version 6 of the Authoring Tool:

  • More than two drop areas now possible
  • Several different ‘look and feel’ designs for improved user experience
  • In addition to text can now accommodate image drop items

(More detailed information and on-line examples to appear here early in the new year.)

Missing words

This is a NEW quiz template in version 6 of the Authoring Tool.

This template allows you to create a page with a question  and a text area when the student can select from a pre-defined list of words either:

  • drag and drop interaction
  • select from a drop down list

(More detailed information and on-line examples to appear here early in the new year.)

Quiz results

This template allows you to track the results of assessment questions in your project. Please note, the Assessment Question - Record Response check box must be selected for results to be recorded in this template.

This template allows the author to customise the feedback to the learner dependent on the number of answers they get correct. There are three states:

  • The learner has completed all the questions correctly
  • The learner has completed some of the questions correctly
  • The learner has not completed any of the questions correctly (this is an optional case of the second point)

The author can customise the different responses to these states.

(More detailed information and on-line examples to appear here early in the new year.)

Movie

The Movie template allows you to create page containing a movie and accompanying text to right-hand side.

This is a ‘legacy template’ for complete compatibility with the unsupported version 4 of the Tool.  We would always request that an author would think carefully of using LPTV and the Embedded Template; or, from version 6, we would strongly advise LPTV combined with the brand NEW Jukebox template for a more efficient streaming of any video files.

Flash

The Flash template allows you to create a page containing a flash video and optional blocks of text surrounding it.

(More detailed information and on-line examples to appear here early in the new year.)

Embed code

The Embedded Content template allows you to display video, images or other content that is available on the world wide web. For example, you may want to include short video clip in your module that has been uploaded to Learning Pool TV.

You can also embed content from YouTube, Google Maps or Flickr in the same way.

(More detailed information and on-line examples to appear here early in the new year.)

Jukebox

This is a NEW multimedia template in version 6 of the Authoring Tool and allows you to:

  • present videos or mp3 podcasts; either singularly or as a collection of related media with a handy carousel presentation
  • attached transcripts and/or subtitles to each
  • reads information straight from LPTV so video presentations can be created with a minimum of effort

(More detailed information and on-line examples to appear here early in the new year.)

(We are currently developing an on-line resource to help you create your subtitles to use with your Jukebox presentations.  We aim to have this tool live through learningpool.com in February 2012.)

Beta Testing

We have been deep in a closed beta testing process for a month or so with a group of customers exploring the new functionality of the Authoring Tool.  In the last week our Instructional Design Team has released our first customer course for review and also our first customer-created content has gone into their DLE for internal review.

From Monday 19 December we would like to offer to widen the beta testing and invite any other interested individuals to join in with the process.

Please email rob@learningpool.com from Monday 19 December if the following applies to you

  • You do not use Citrix to install/manage software on your system.
  • You can install new software (and  updates) independent of your IT Team

(and most of importantly)

  • You have time to spare for testing between now and the end of January next year..

A (mild) warning: beta testing is a two way process.  We are trying to release an update every Monday so we need all beta testers to be able to update their version of the Authoring Tool as soon as possible after we make a new release.

Release date

Please make a note of the 31 January 2012.  This is the date we aim to release of the full live version 6 of the Authoring Tool.  Please keep this date in mind for contacting your IT resource so you can update as soon as possible to the full new version.

More information will follow at the very beginning of 2012.
